Broken Mockingbird Eggs

A few days ago I found this broken mockingbird egg
on the ground near my little garden spot.

I looked around trying to find where the nest was.

I didn't find the nest, but I found the parents.
They didn't seem overly concerned about anything,
and were busily doing their daily grooming ritual.

"Awhhhh! that feels good," she seemed to be
saying as she scratched behind her ear.

And as she looked down at me from her perch in my mulberry tree,
I could imagine her thinking,
"Really? Do you find me that interesting?"

And the answer to that is,
"Yes, Mrs. Mockingbird.  I do find you that interesting!"

King Solomon was a man who found nature interesting.
Considered to be the wisest man who ever lived,
he authored most of the book of Proverbs
and also the book of  Ecclesiastes.

Sometimes I wonder if the way he became wise
was by learning from his many mistakes!

Maybe wisdom often comes with a price?
...A willingness to risk making a mistake,
but even more importantly,
a willing mind to learn from it?
What do you think?

After your comments, that first picture looked like a mama bird in mourning! But yes, she is grooming herself I'm sure. Do you know if some birds put their eggs in the nest with other birds? My daughter-in-law's mother has a mockingbird nest (I think - the eggs are speckled like that) but there are some regular eggs in the nest too. If you know, could you write me at debracgraber@gmail.com.

I love mockingbirds! One serenaded me as I worked in the garden today; yesterday we saw a wee one (parent nearby) under a hedge at a shopping center parking lot. Thanks for sharing yours, I hope you get to see a little fledgling soon!

Love your post. Mockingbirds were like the air and the sun and the rain where I grew up. They were always nearby. Last time I was there (2010 maybe), they had all been wiped out by West Nile. I am hoping they will recover in time.

What a iconic bird the mocking bird is - I'd like to see one for real.

Cheers and thanks for linking to WBW.

Like Stewart, I too would love to see a mockingbird in the flesh.

Esther, I love those mockingbirds, and the little shell!
I don't love learning from my mistakes--painful but necessary.

Looks like we're almost neighbors.

Aw, hopefully the nest is nearby and all is well. I see mockingbirds all the time -- in fact, just today -- as it is the Texas state bird!!
Great shots, especially the leg scratching one!!

Wisdom for this momma of younguns' kind of like the mockingbird ... so crazy valuable.

It's a delight to meet you today. I hope you don't mind if I splash around a bit to get to know you. This looks like a refreshing place to dip into some serious goodness.
