Everybody Can Do Something!

Last week my husband and I made a trip to Georgia
to be with my youngest sis on her birthday.
On the way there we encountered some of the damage that was done
by the F4 tornado that had wound its way through several Southern States.

Our 6th grade Sunday School class had been studying the story of the Good Samaritan from Luke chapter 10 in the Bible.  After studying the lesson, I showed them some of the pictures that I had taken of the disaster area that my husband and I had encountered.
We called their attention to the poster on the bulletin board that said,
"What Can I Do?"

After brainstorming, they came up with several ideas of ways they could help.
One of their ideas was to have a car wash.
We have had a cold, rainy spring,
so although they probably would have enjoyed doing this,
for the sake of the teachers involved
the idea was put on hold until warmer days arrived to stay!

They all agreed that
EVERYBODY CAN DO SOMETHING!
The artists in the class got to work and made this poster.

The idea that got the most enthusiastic response was a Toy Drive,
which we hoped could help bring comfort to the children who had lost their toys due to the tornado.  Our class quickly got to work to cover collection boxes with colored paper.
We used the pictures that I had brought to decorate the boxes
to call attention to why we were doing this.

We enlisted the help of our church's technical staff to produce a short video
to make others aware of our project.
This video is to be aired in "Big Church" next Sunday
and we hope to post it on YouTube.
We are filled with anticipation and excitement as we begin the collection and distribution process.  With the recent horrific devastating F4 tornado in Joplin,
we have an area closer to home that can benefit from our efforts.

So, as a Sunday School class, we challenge you:
What Can You Do?
EVERYBODY CAN DO SOMETHING!

Excellent lesson!

I don't recall a spring like this before. Currently, there are tornado warnings all around us.

great idea. I find it's harder emotionally to face such devastation but help is always good.

Several years ago we had a horrible forest fire on Mt. Lemmon, the place us Tucsonans can go very quickly when the temps here reach in the 100"s plus! Many of the permanent residents lost their homes and had to be evacuated to several of the hotels in Tucson. My best friend artist and I grabbed some art supplies and arranged with one of the hotels to give us a room where all the children and adults who had lost their homes could come during the day while they were staying at the hotel, and we would do art projects with them. It gave them something more to do than sit in their rooms and watch the fires on t.v.

So nice of you to do something to help. I think one of the best things for me is the Red Cross setting up a way to donate by texting.

Now this is a great post, sad that they went through the tornado, but great that everybody can do something!

The news media keeps tabs on this guy claiming the world is ending here and there and everywhere when we should be watching the Lord. I am astounded at all the natural disasters all around us. I think we need to focus on what is important because we never know what is going to happen tomorrow. I think this project you started is wonderful and shows just how much goodness and kindness there is around us.

Wonderful post for the letter F! The damage really is hard to wrap my brain around but you are right we all can do something to ease the pain and loss of our neighbors...

Mother Nature has been acting as if she's peri-menopausal these past months, if not years already. We will all need to learn to help those near and far adversely affected by her vicious tantrums. I like how you teach your school children to be caring and responsible through ACTION.

What a wonderful idea your class had. Yes, I do believe everybody can do something. I know there is something I can do...and along with it I will pray.

What a great challenge! Even though it's small I made a donation this week to the tornado relief in Alabama, and am funding two tree cutters a hefty sum to remove some of our downed trees. ;-) I thank God that's all we lost.

What a wonderful way to give children the opportunity to practice compassion and generosity to those in need. It's a lesson that will stick with them throughout their lives! Bless you.

I agree with you. Everyone can help in some way. And what wonderful lessons these children are learning about generosity of spirit.

Thanks for a fantastically uplifting link this week.

You made my heart smile.
