Well, I finally caught him!

| I grabbed my camera, switched lenses and tried to grab a shot before he flew away. He was on the peach tree just outside my window. This shot is not very clear, because it's through the screen and window. |

| The parallel rows that he had been leaving in our maple tree had given him away.
Sapsuckers drill holes in live trees,
then return to eat the sap and small insects.
Was it his drilling that had been killing our maple tree? |

| I've been trying to catch a glimpse of this guy for a couple of years! From the peach tree, he flew to a large oak on our side yard. I wished my lens was more powerful so I could get a GREAT photo, but this is the best I could do before he flew. |

Yes, that was him - a "Yellow Bellied Sapsucker"!
I just love it when God surprises me with a visit from one of His elusive creatures!

This is such a pretty bird. I see him here each spring and enjoy having him around.
I love this! I am a birder on a migratory path in south Texas. I have the same book, always trying to put a name with a face. : ) Sometimes, I think I ought to stop trying to find the names and just enjoy the wonder and the beauty. But, thus far, I can't let the book and naming part go!
We have Golden-fronted Ladderback woodpeckers that peck away at our trees and even house once in a while. Even the metal water heater vent on the roof! ?? A young one, we believe that does that.
God has blessed us with so many beautiful creatures. May your birding be ever-joyful!

I have that book too!
...I remember early years at High school and next morning, after watching The Honeymooners the night before, I'd laugh at the humorous antics of Jacky Gleeson, and especially lithe' Art Carney. Art I figure, was a bird-watcher, I clearly remember him talking about 'the yellow-bellied sapsucker' which then, I thought was a funny comical name just for the show. You got great snaps, lovely to see this elusive bird

One of my top 10 fave birds and they can be difficult to get for sure. I love their mewing sounds they make too, really a very sweet bird~
